Alex's Story: "Love, compassion and kindness is the common language"

The last week has been one I won’t forget.

It started with shock at the horrendous attack in North Belfast, and then concern and anger when I saw the threats in the AI-produced posts.

I love that Belfast has become so diverse, and that we are a place of refuge for people fleeing violence in their own countries.

The idea that a small number of hate-filled men could have such an impact on our neighbourhoods and our neighbours was so frustrating.

I watched with despair the coverage of families and individuals being attacked and intimidated by men who knew to cover their faces, but in an attempt to evade responsibility for their actions, rather than in shame at their actions.

And then, my focus shifted.

A friend told me that Anaka Women’s Collective were organising to support families and individuals who had been attacked, threatened or fearful.

I joined the WhatsApp group and went from being frustrated and angry to being so heartened by the most incredible beauty of kindness, compassion and love I have seen. People who have never met before organising to do whatever is needed. And many, many more also wanting to find ways to help in any way.

To be clear, I am talking about people with pink skin, black skin and all the gorgeous hues in between. Those who have been born here and those who have more recently made it their home.

Love, compassion and kindness is the common language spoken among this beautiful tribe.

I have had the privilege to meet with, and support, a number of families in these difficult times. I am grateful that, through this experience, I am carrying forward deep friendships with remarkable, resilient women and their families. We will stand together when and where we need to, against the hate, violence and intimidation.

Thank you Anaka Women’s Collective and all who coordinated the response. You have provided us all with a way of directing our anger and frustration towards hope and compassion.
